Skull base surgery addresses conditions affecting the bones at the base of the skull — the complex region where the brain sits. Prof Lubbe specialises in endoscopic approaches that avoid the need for open cranial surgery in many cases.
Conditions Treated
- Pituitary tumours
- Meningiomas (including sphenoid wing meningiomas)
- Craniopharyngiomas
- Chordomas
- Olfactory neuroblastoma
- CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) leaks
- Encephaloceles
- Orbital tumours
Approaches
Endoscopic Endonasal Approach
The most common skull base approach — working through the nostrils with no visible incisions. Ideal for midline skull base tumours, pituitary lesions, and CSF leaks.
Transorbital Approach (TONES)
A lateral approach through a small incision near the eye, providing access to lateral skull base structures including the sphenoid wing and cavernous sinus.
Multidisciplinary Care
Complex skull base surgery is performed in collaboration with neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists, and radiologists to ensure the best outcomes for each patient.
