Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is defined as inflammation of the sinuses lasting more than 12 weeks despite treatment. It is one of the most common conditions treated by Prof Lubbe, and can significantly impact quality of life.

Symptoms

  • Nasal congestion and blockage
  • Thick nasal or post-nasal discharge
  • Facial pain and pressure
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • Headache
  • Fatigue and sleep disturbance

Causes

  • Bacterial or fungal infection
  • Allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps
  • Deviated nasal septum obstructing drainage
  • Immune deficiency
  • Environmental factors

Treatment

Medical Management

Long-term nasal saline irrigation, corticosteroid nasal sprays, targeted antibiotics, and allergy treatment form the foundation of medical management.

Surgical Treatment

When symptoms persist despite medical therapy, FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) opens the sinus drainage pathways to restore normal function. This is performed through the nostrils with no external incisions.
